Maternity ward
General comments on management of patients in maternity ward:
- The Midwives carry out all the admissions and the discharges after normal deliveries. The post operative mothers, complications of pregnancies and other medical problems in pregnancy are handled by medical officers. Every pregnant woman in labor is monitored using a charted partogram.
- Labour ward policies on safe deliveries, infection control and protection of personnel are practiced routinely. All the health workers are not yet immunized against Hepatitis B due to lack of vaccines.
- The Maternal death audits are carried out by the maternal death audit committee. Most times maternal deaths are due to poor general conditions of the cases on arrival. A few are due to other medical complications in pregnancy..
There is a provision within maternity ward for the management of premature babies. However it is limited by absence of incubators.
- Generally there was a decrease in the total admissions while normal deliveries rose.
- The hospital’s contribution to the proportion of supervised deliveries in the health units in the Catchment area was 28.2% (1875/6631*100), a negligible decline as compared to 28.7% in 2007-2008 (1,900/6631 * 100)
- The Caesarian Section rate decreased by 0.3% to 17.7%.
- Most of the cases arrived with delayed obstructed labour and the only means to assist the deliveries was Caesarian Section.
-
The outcomes of the interventions on the babies were rather good despite late arrivals.
-
There was a slight reduction (4.1%) in the number of Fresh Still birth (24 in 07-08 to 23 in 08-09)
